Uddamethi (Raw Mango Curry)

In konkani (goan) cuisine they have variety of dishes with different flavours. In most of the dishes kokani people use coconut and kokum. In some very special dishes like amba sasam, ansa-fansachi bhaji they use ripe mangoes, ambade(hog plums) ,as far as raw mangoes are concerned they have a very famous one 'Uddamethi'. You will love this sweet and sour raw mango curry with unique bitter flavour of fenugreek seeds.

Servings: 2 to 3 Persons


Ingredients:
1 small unripe mango peeled ( 7-8 medium cubes of raw mango)
2 tspn udad dal
1/4 tspn fenugreek seeds
1 1/2 tspn coriander seeds
2 dry red chilies
1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
1 1/2 - 2 cups water
2 tspn jaggery
1/2 tspn turmeric powder
salt as per taste
for tempering- 1/2 tspn mustard seeds, 3-4 curry leaves,1/4 tspn asafoetida

Method:
1. Peel raw mango and cut it into 1" to 1 1/2" of cubes.
2. In a saucepan take udad dal,coriander seeds,fenugreek seeds and dry chillies. Roast everything till you smell a nice aroma. Grind everything with coconut by using 1/2 cup of hot water. Grind to a fine paste.
3. Add 1 cup of water,turmeric powder,salt and raw mango cubes to the ground coconut paste. Bring it to boil.
4. Cover saucepan with a lid and let the raw mango cook for 3-4 minutes. Then add jaggery as per taste. boil curry for another 2 minutes. Turn off the heat.
5. Heat oil in a small saucepan. Add mustard seeds. Let it crackle then add curry leaves and asafoetida. Give tadka to the curry and cover curry immediately.
6. Serve curry with rice or with chapati.
