Dal Tadka

Read this recipe in Marathi 
Servings : 4 Persons 

½ cup split red grams(tuvar dal)
¼ cup split green gram (moong dal)
1 tbspn split bengal gram (chana dal)
¼ cup finely chopped onion
½ cup chopped tomato
½ tspn red chilly powder
¼ tspn cumin
¼ tspn mustard seeds
¼ tspn asafetida
5-6 curry leaves
3-4 garlic cloves
2 dry chilies
Salt to taste
2 tbspn oil


1. Pressure cook dal till tender. Mash cooked dal and keep it aside.
2. Heat 1 tbspn of oil in a saucepan. Add mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Add asafetida and curry leaves. Add chopped onion and stir till translucent. Add tomato and stir.
3. Add red chilly powder, turmeric powder and some salt. Stir till the oil starts oozing out.
4. Add mashed dal. Add chopped coriander leaves and salt. Bring it to boil. Add little water if the dal becomes too thick.
5. Now heat 1 tbspn of oil in a small saucepan. Add cumin. Add chopped garlic. When garlic becomes golden brown, add dry chilies broken into 2 pieces. Give tadka to the dal and cover dal immediately with a lid.
6. Serve hot with rice or roti.
